Jordyn Davis (b. 1995) is a ground-breaking, multi-talented, and award-winning bassist, composer, singer-songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist from Detroit, MI. She is the first African-American woman to receive a Bachelor's Degree in Music Composition from Michigan State University, as well as the first Michigan State student to receive a Bachelor's Degree in Music Composition and Jazz Studies concurrently. Following her undergraduate studies, Jordyn also completed a Masters’s Degree in Jazz Studies at Michigan State University & worked as a graduate teaching assistant for Rodney Whitaker. Upon relocating to Brooklyn, NY in 2021 Jordyn was named one of two inaugural Jazz Leader Fellowship recipients by the Brooklyn Conservatory of Music. She has also recently completed work on the Tony-Winning Broadway Musical “New York, New York: A new musical as well as a residency at Brown University while collaborating with Craig Harris & the contemporary dance company Urban Bush Women.

Davis’ work spans a wide range of musical styles including Jazz, Contemporary Classical, Jazz, Music for Film and Television, and songwriting. Her music has been featured on the PBS Limited Series “Music for Social Justice” and has been commissioned by the Juilliard School Preparatory Division, the New York Philharmonic, Michigan State University Bands, Axiom Brass, Detroit Chamber Strings among several other renowned ensembles & institutions. As an ambitious, hard-working artist with a passion for creating and performing music that promotes justice and inclusion,  she has worked with some of the biggest names in the music industry, including Micheal Dease, Wycliffe Gordon, Etienne Charles, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Maria Schneider, Jerome Jennings, Brian Stokes Mitchell, Lin Manuel-Miranda, John Kander, Jaime Lozano, Shirazette Tinnin, Craig Harris & L Morgan Lee. She is also the proud leader of her own band/ensemble “Composetheway” .

Composetheway is a genre-bending chamber ensemble led & founded by Jordyn Davis. What began as a solo singer-songwriter project, created to express her reflections on the importance of self-love & empowerment, has evolved into a malleable musical experience rooted in collaborative performance, composition & improvisation. With the aim of expressing her ideas on self-love, empowerment and personal reflection, her debut EP “Connections” was independently released in 2017 and in 2020 was nominated for three WYCE Jammie Music Awards. Composetheway won “Most Inspirational Performance” at the 2019 Social Justice Arts Festival at Michigan State University & recently released a new single entitled “Night Off'“ available on all major music distribution platforms.

Through her love for music, Jordyn has cemented herself as an impassioned teacher and mentor to youths of all ages, working with organizations such as the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, Girls Rock Detroit, and Science Gallery,  while focusing on the importance of music, composition, individuality, empowerment, and community. She has worked with many other young artists, held master classes, and led music-based projects to educate young people who are still discovering their love of music. With hard work and dedication to her craft, Davis has established herself as a shining light in the music industry who will continue to light the way for the next generation of musicians.
